2009 Budget

Agenda

For the 2009 budget we need to plan out:

        ❑        income
        ❑        expenses

All of our income is membership dues.

We should expect some attrition with some existing members not re-joining.

We should also plan new members … which we have a large potential for if we get more marketing going and start to formalize our sign up process.

We need to have our current bank balance and look at the end of year statement.

We have very few expenses but should allocate some for:

  • participation in contests
  • officer education
  • any build up of a TM library that we want to do

If you have any other items please bring them forward at our Aug-2009 meeting.

So we need a very simple budget and track to it on a bi-monthly basis to see if we are on track.

I am here to install the new officers of Operations Orators #9344, to briefly state their key responsibilities, and to remind them of the challenges that lie ahead. Their collective challenge is to make this Club one of the best in Area 35. This will involve helping the members achieve their goals as well as leading Operations Orators #9344 to President’s Distinguished Club status this coming year.

Will the new Officer team please come forward and form a line beginning with the Sergeant-at-Arms and ending with the President!

Each Officer is obligated to

  1. attend Club Executive Committee meetings,
  2. attend District sponsored Club Officer Training,
  3. and prepare a successor for his or her respective office.

I will now briefly describe the challenges and key responsibilities for each Officer beginning with the Sergeant at Arms.

1. Audience — Who is your (most important) audience?
2. Objectives — What is your objective for this presentation?
3. Problem / Solution — What business problem are you helping to provide a solution for?
4. Evidence — What evidence are you offering to support your solution?
5. Anecdotes — Which anecdotes illustrate your message?
6. Sequencing — In what sequence will you present your evidence?
7. Charts — Which charts will best convey your data?
8. Layouts — What layout will you use for each slide?
9. Stakeholders — Have you addressed the concerns of each stakeholder?
10. Measurement — How will you measure the success of your presentation?

Other review comments:

* When presenting data, pay particular particular attention to what is new or different.
* Drive action. Or in Abela’s words: “What does it allow them to start doing, stop doing, or continue doing that would be difficult or impossible without this information.” (p47)
* Respecting the challenges faced by users. Understand what problems and levers the audience has available to them.
* Consider your audience “type”. How does the audience best absorb information?
* Consider the presentation environment. In what context will the audience be engaging with the information?
* Use different types of data (e.g. statistical, anecdotal). Sometimes specific data points can help focus attention better than an aggregate metric.
* Identify problems, then give people the tools to address the problem. This parallels Abela’s storytelling technique of creating and resolving tension.
* Users before technology. Usability before features. Abela notes: “Presentation and advice and tools have been developed for the benefit of the presenter, not the audience.” (p5)

Here’s a thought:

  • Website to collect information
  • Fee based review of wedding speeches
  • Three or more Toastmasters to review
  • Additional billing for writing speeches
  • All internet based - but could include videos of the speakers to review. YouTube would work if they could manage that.
  • Collection is also all internet based.
  • Partners could manage communication and scheduling from an internet site.
