ALB Requirements

June 14th, 2009

Here is what I see as the requirements:

        ✓        Achieved Competent Leader (CL) award;
        ✓        Achieved Competent Communicator (CC) award (or achieved Competent Toastmaster CTM award);
✓        Served at least six months as a club officer (president, vice president education, vice president membership, vice president public relations, secretary, treasurer or sergeant at arms) and participated in the preparation of a Club Success Plan while serving in this office.
✓        While serving in the above office, participated in a district-sponsored club officer training program; and
❑        Conducted any two programs from The Successful Club Series and/or The Leadership Excellence Series.

The Successful Club series is:

        ❑        Moments of Truth
❑        Moments of Truth Club Evaluation Chart
❑        Finding New Members For Your Club
        ❑        Evaluate to Motivate
        ❑        Closing the Sale
❑        Creating The Best Club Climate
❑        Setting the Stage for Success: Meeting Roles and Reponsibilities
        ✓        Mentoring
        ❑        Keeping The Commitment
        ❑        Going Beyond Our Club
✓        How To Be A Distinguished Club
        ❑        The Toastmasters Educational Program

The Leadership Excellence Series is:

        ❑        The Visionary Leader
        ❑        Developing a Mission
        ❑        Values and Leadership
        ❑        Goal Setting and Planning
        ✓        Delegate to Empower
        ❑        Building A Team
        ❑        Giving Effective Feedback
❑        The Leader as a Coach
        ❑        Motivating People
        ❑        Service and Leadership
        ✓        Resolving Conflict

It reads like the assignment is to lead a group session on a selected topic. I have picked mentoring because I am already in the TRIEC mentoring program . ‘How To Be A Distinguished Club’ may be interesting in getting a strong score for the club in 2009.

I have picked “Delegate to Empower” because I think this is a premium skill to learn.

I have picked an option “Resolving Conflict” because of the course I took in 2008 on ‘Conflict Resolution for Project Managers’ which I found was excellent. It used a lot of the teachings of Steven Covey’s 7 Habits.

so don’t need to submit evaluator name.

But make a decision on whether your manager gets a note about it

And pick the two free manuals that come with completing this level. They could be your interest in the ACB project list.

Club Standards

June 13th, 2009

A successful, dynamic, quality Toastmasters club meets the following 10 standards:

  1. Meetings are showcase events. Meetings start and end on time, are fast-paced and flow smoothly, with no awkward transitions between segments. Participants are prepared.
  2. Club officers are effective. They are trained in their roles and they fulfill their responsibilities.
  3. Membership recruitment is ongoing. Every club needs a constant influx of new members to combat natural membership turnover, to bring fresh ideas to the club and to provide a stronger leadership base.
  4. New members are oriented and inducted. Members who are formally inducted into the club and are oriented to club operations and the educational program are more likely to be active, supportive and enthusiastic members.
  5. Every member is assigned a mentor. Mentors help new members become familiar with the club and work on their first new speeches. They help experienced members to develop special skills.
  6. All members are working toward their Competent Communicator (CC), Competent Leader (CL) and other educational awards. Scheduled speakers give manual speeches.
  7. All members are trained in effective evaluation. Every evaluator gives positive comments and offers specific suggestions for improvement.
  8. Members are recognized for their accomplishments. Swift recognition for achievement encourages members to set and achieve even higher goals.
  9. Everyone is working to help the club become a Distinguished Club. All members are familiar with the Distinguished Club Program, its value to the club and the club’s plan for becoming a Distinguished Club.
  10. Administrative work is handled promptly and efficiently. The club keeps its financial and membership records current and accurate. Club leaders submit documents such as club officer lists, dues renewal invoices and award and membership applications promptly to World Headquarters.

2008 Club Success Plan Results

June 13th, 2009

In 2007, we had a club success plan document on the wiki but we had too much information in it and couldn’t keep it up to date with few people participating in its maintenance.

This version is to be simpler just reflecting the scorecard. This is for 2008 and another will be added for 2009

Goal Result Achieved Notes
Two CCs Yes Diana, Michael
Two More CCs Not yet
One ACB, ACS or ACG No
One CL, ALB, ALS, or DTM Not yet Mike needs 1 speech evaluation for CL
One more CL, ALB, ALS, or DTM No
Four new members Yes
Four more new members Yes
Minimum of four club officers trained during each of two training periods No
One dues renewal invoice and one club officer list submitted on time Yes

Results as of 12-Jun-2009 are clipped below - a bit too small to read but success on new members and renewals and officer list

PastedGraphic2.NdO7UziUWGbf.jpg

So when Diana’s results are entered we will be at 4 points.

When Mike completes his CL then we will be at 5 points.

POWER POINTS

December 23rd, 2008

I happened upon a Globe and Mail blog list and one of them has some short hints in it. That blog is by Harvey Schachter

Harvey used the the Power Points title for his entry and he is making a blog by clipping from other people’s blogs and news articles and not adding any opinion or content  … well [cough cough] exactly like this blog entry.

Here are some of the points:

  • Procter & Gamble chief executive officer A.G. Lafley says the secret to communications is simple slogans, repeated over and over. Human beings don’t want to stay focused, so his job is to get them to focus their creativity, productivity, and efficiency or effectiveness around the company’s own focus in those areas. U.S. News and World Report
  • When someone tells you that what you want to do can’t be done, they will only be right if you believe them, says Burlington-based consultant George Torok. You just need to find out how to do it. Motivational Speaker blog
  • With nearly three-quarters of human resources professionals female, a survey has found that practitioners would prefer a more even balance between the genders so the profession would have more credibility and not be seen as a female ghetto. Canadian HR Reporter
  • Tom Peters makes big bucks telling audiences everything was simpler in the past, but he confesses that he doesn’t feel managing is becoming more difficult these days. He contends it’s the arrogance of modernity to believe we face business challenges that are more difficult than our predecessors, who had railways, the automobile, the Great Depression, or world wars disrupt their businesses. The Financial Times
  • If you like to write your daily to-do list on a small card or piece of paper, you might enjoy shifting it to your desktop with MiniTask (http://www.minitask.org), which allows you to check off tasks that are done (or have them disappear), group tasks by themes, add new tasks through the day and shift them around.  Lifehacker.com

OK not really that profound but I clipped it because I think it would be a good conversation or table topics list.  For table topics, we might have to have a longer time frame to give time for a better presentation … then only a few speakers.

I liked some additional information that Harvey provided on a related page … now gone from the G&M site — :

FINISH 2008 IMPECCABLY

Success coach Robin Sharma preaches the importance of ending things well, be it a meeting or the year. Often, we get distracted near the end of the year, losing energy and motivation. To finish 2008 impeccably, he suggests:

Go back to the beginning

Review your personal goals from the start of the year. If there’s work still to be completed, tackle it now. You may want to recommit to daily practices that you intended but failed to uphold.

Review your performance

Write the story of your year. What happened? What surprised you? List your accomplishments, which will probably surprise you. Study your calendar for the year to see how you invested your time.

Lessons

Write down the five to 10 lessons you learned this year. To avoid losing them, incorporate them in your goals for next year.

Recognize people

With handwritten notes, thank those who helped you this year.
